Jetting off to Paris

This Easter, a group of 25 of Brooksbank’s finest netballers headed across the channel en route for the International Junior Netball Festival at Disneyland Paris. “The girls can’t wait to take part at this premier junior netballing event,” says coach, Miss Kirsty Hemmingway, speaking before they departed.

The festival, which attracts competitors from as far away as Australia, combines netball tournaments and coaching masterclasses with international players. Five days of play-offs, matches, skills development, coaching clinics and sightseeing in the famous resort, are just some of the attractions on offer.

“Plus, we will be taking our own member of the England squad with us!” said Kirsty.

Following trials at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, Imogen Allison has been successfully selected to play for the U19 National Potential Group.

“We are thrilled that she beat girls who were up to two years older than herself, and those who had experienced playing at national level.”

At 16 years of age, Imogen has come a long way from playing high five netball at primary school.

“Playing sports like athletics, football and, most of all, netball has always been my thing and I’ve enjoyed playing for Brooksbank ever since Year 7.

“Team sports particularly appeal because play is shared and not singular experience,” said Imogen.

Imogen and Brooksbank sixth former, Alice Smith, have both had extremely successful seasons outside school in the U19 Yorkshire Jets squad.

Both are now key players in the team. Alice Smith says, “It’s my second year with the Jets and I am really proud to be team vice-captain”. It is Imogen’s first year but she has obviously caught the eye of the England coaches!

“The level of commitment is high with playing and training up to 15 hours a week, but it’s certainly worth it,” said Imogen, who wants to study sports sciences at university.

Looking forward to the festival and Disneyland Paris, Imogen said, “It’s going to be a great way of celebrating our years of netballing at Brooksbank. Most of all, I can’t wait to meet Mickey Mouse!”
