Would-be sailors of all ages took to the water at the annual National Go Boating Day event in Sowerby Bridge. Shire Cruisers at The Wharf hosted the event, which was organised in partnership with Drifters Waterway Holidays.

The event at Sowerby Bridge, where the Rochdale Canal meets the Calder & Hebble Navigation, was one of 21 open days taking place on the canals and rivers across England and Wales, offering boat tours, holiday discounts and, in many cases, free trips on skippered boats.

Nigel Stevens, director of Shire Cruises, said: “It was a good day, lots of people young and old took part.

“Lots of children had a chance at steering the boats, which was lovely.

“One man who has lived by the canal for 50 years said it was first time he had been on it and said it was wonderful.

“We had 77 passengers on the boats and about 150 visitors overall from right across Yorkshire.”
