Direc­tor hits the right note in com­pe­ti­tion

A mu­si­cal direc­tor from a renowned brass band was awarded for her band’s ac­com­plish­ments. El­land Youth Band and mu­si­cal direc­tor Sa­man­tha Har­ri­son came sec­ond in the In­ter­me­di­ate Sec­tion of the Na­tional Youth Band Cham­pi­onships of Great Bri­tain.

On April 19, El­land Youth Band was awarded in a spe­cial cer­e­mony at Manch­ester’s North­ern Col­lege of Mu­sic.

Sa­man­tha was awarded the Brian Hicks me­mo­rial shield for out­stand­ing work with El­land Youth Band.

Or­gan­ised by Brass Bands Eng­land, all bands had to play a 20-minute pro­gramme in­clud­ing the set test piece Plus Ex­tra by An­drew Stephen­son - a work spe­cially com­mis­sioned for the com­pe­ti­tion.

The band’s prin­ci­pal cor­net player, Bethan Plant, was awarded out­stand­ing soloist of the sec­tion.

El­land Youth Band had a suc­cess­ful time at the na­tional cham­pi­onships
