Bothwell Castle ceremony

- Leona Greenan

A Bothwell bride said ‘I do’ to her knight in shining armour with a Gothic wedding at Bothwell Castle recently.

Nikki Young – a former St Bride’s Primary and St John Ogilvie High School pupil – opted for the medieval theme over a traditional white wedding when she walked down the aisle to wed Graeme Roots on Saturday, April 1.

The couple, who both now live in sunny Tenerife, amazed guests with their black and red attire, complete with Graeme, from Dunfermline, donning a chainmail suit of armour and Nikki posing with a huge sword for the photographs in the grounds of the 14th century castle.

Nikki’s proud mum Lynn, and gran to the couple’s daughters Lexi (4) and Brogan (18 months), explained: “The inspiration definitely came from Nikki, who has always been interested in Gothic themes and has even got a Gothic tattoo.

“The fact we have Bothwell Castle – a 14th century stronghold – in our home town was the icing on the black and red cake.”

Whilst Nikki (23) and Graeme (30) were happy to go all-out with the Gothic theme, the couple allowed guests to wear traditional wedding attire with the bridal party in red and black and groom Graeme actually wearing a kilt.

Lynn joked: “The guests thought it was a great idea, all except for grandma, as most of them had never seen a bride in a black dress before.

“A huge thank you to everyone who shared in Nikki and Graeme’s special Gothinspired day.”
