A big step in the right direction
These super slimmers stepped up to a charity challenge by raising £1400 for Cancer Research UK.
The 80-strong team from Hamilton, Bothwell, Blantyre and Uddingston took part in a sponsored 6km walk around the loch at Strathclyde Park.
Slimming World’s Walk All Over Cancer campaign challenges members to raise vital funds that will be used to help find a cure for cancer.
And many of them would not have managed the distance before setting off on their personal weight-loss journeys.
Sadie Murray, who attends the Bothwell Wednesday evening group, has lost 6st 1lbs since joining in August 2015.
She managed the distance even though she reckoned that she ‘couldn’t run for a bus’ before losing weight.
Sadie said: “Before I lost the weight, an event like this would have felt completely out of reach.
“I barely had the energy to go about my day, let alone go for a walk and at times I felt trapped inside my body.
“I would never have thought I could do something like this.
“Slimming World helped me break free from the shackles I felt were holding me back from living the life I dreamed of.
“From the moment I walked through the door of my group everything changed.
“I was welcomed so warmly and instantly made to feel like I was worth something again. Everyone in that room became a friend in seconds, and they still are.
“We are all there for the same reason – to lose weight and to help and support each other to do the same.
“As the weight came off I found I had so much more energy. The eating plan means I can fill up on lots of tasty everyday food. I never feel hungry or deprived and I can still treat myself every now and then too.
“In our group we started talking about easy ways to fit steps into our everyday lives and I soon realised how much more I could be walking without much more effort.
“Walking with friends, taking the stairs instead of the lift – I soon found easy ways to fit in more steps and build up my activity levels at a pace that suited me.”
Weight loss consultant Lynn Baird, who runs the Bothwell Slimming World group, added: “We had challenging wet weather conditions for our walk, and in true Slimming World-style our members, their friends and families were out in force to support each other.
“They showed just what can be done when we come together – both in terms of achieving something amazing and raising money for a great cause too.
“I’m so proud of all of my members, including Sadie, who set themselves the challenge of walking more and absolutely smashed it.”
