Van der Weg frustrated after failing to hold out in Dingwall, but admits it’s another point to safety

Kenny van der Weg says Hamilton should have beaten Ross County on Saturday, but they’re still in a strong position.

The Dutch defender made his first return to Dingwall since moving to Accies in January, but it didn’t go well in the first half as County took a 1-0 lead into the interval.

Captain Dougie Imrie’s introducti­on at the break saw a dramatic turnaround as Accies took a 2-1 lead inside eight minutes, only for Andrew Davies to head County level in 75 minutes.

The draw leaves Accies eight points clear of their rivals, however, with two games in hand, and van der Weg said: “It’s not impossible to concede a goal from a corner but when you’re 2-1 up you need to win the game. We didn’t win, but in this time of the season a point is a point and you need to take it.

“In the first half, we didn’t play well. In the second half, we changed it, won the headers and defended well.

“I think what the gaffer said was right at the break. In the first half, we didn’t win headers, we didn’t win the second balls, and it was hard to play.

“In the second half, from the first minute, we won the headers and the second balls and you could see a big difference.

“I think if we had done that from the beginning of the game we would have won, but we are eight points clear, we have two games in hand, and in every game we have to play the same way and take the points.”
