A small nar­row bridge that con­nects Hamil­ton to East Kil­bride is set to re-open to­mor­row (Fri­day, April 13).

South La­nark­shire Coun­cil have been car­ry­ing out re­pair works to the crum­bling bridge at Ne­w­house­mill Road for sev­eral weeks now.

The bridge was closed after large chunks of ma­sonry col­lapsed – leav­ing a gap­ing hole at its side.

And while the road was orig­i­nally due to re-open last week, South La­nark­shire Coun­cil have up­dated their web­site say­ing it is now ex­pected to open to­mor­row (Fri­day, April 13).

Re­pair work was also de­layed when it was dis­cov­ered a high-pres­sure wa­ter main serv­ing thou­sands of homes and busi­nesses would have to be rerouted by Scot­tish Wa­ter be­fore work could be­gin on the bridge it­self.

The coun­cil’s web­site stated: “Ne­w­house­mill Road is closed be­tween Calder­side Road, Hamil­ton and Lis­more, East Kil­bride, from 7pm Mon­day, March 5, to 11pm Fri­day, April 13, for emer­gency re­pairs to bridge.

“Al­ter­na­tive route via A726 Strathaven Road, A725 Kingsway, A725 East Kil­bride Ex­press­way, B7012 Hamil­ton Road (Blan­tyre), Dou­glas Street, Sy­des Brae.”

The coun­cil first be­came aware of dam­age to one of the wing­walls at Ne­w­house­mill Bridge on Mon­day, Fe­bru­ary 12.
