Hun­dreds of books are to be given away in Hamil­ton, Blan­tyre and Larkhall next week to mark World Book Night (April 23).

Boost! – South La­nark­shire’s Com­mu­nity Learn­ing and Home-school Part­ner­ship’s Adult Lit­er­acy and Nu­mer­acy ser­vice – has or­gan­ised a se­ries of events.

The ser­vice’s Kate Mc­geough ex­plained: “A core el­e­ment of our work is to de­velop read­ing skills, and for this rea­son, dur­ing the week be­gin­ning April 16, we are hold­ing a ‘book give­away’ around South La­nark­shire.

“We have been col­lect­ing pre-loved books of all types which would oth­er­wise end up in land­fall, from li­braries, book­sell­ers, pri­vate donors and other sources.

“We in­tend to give these books away at stalls through­out the county.”

The first event will be held at Asda in Hamil­ton on Mon­day, April 16, be­tween 10am and noon, fol­lowed by Asda in Blan­tyre the next day, again be­tween 10am and noon. The third date will be at Larkhall Li­brary on Thurs­day, April 19, be­tween 1.30 and 3.30pm.
