Disappointment hits Down Under Commonwealth Games heartache

- Andy Mcgilvray

Elation on the Gold Coast can quickly turn to heartbreak – and so it has proved for many Lanarkshire competitors.

Hamilton boxer Vicky Glover last week became not only the first Scottish woman boxer in Commonwealth Games history but the first winning Scottish woman boxer as she beat Valerian Spicer of Dominica on a split-decision.

Sadly a split-decision would then cost her a quarter-final bout against experienced Canadian Sabrina Aubin-boucher, costing Glover the chance of winning at least a bronze medal.

Upon leaving the ring, apparently on the verge of tears, the 18-yearold said: “I’m gutted, absolutely devastated.

“I felt like I did really well in there. I kinda thought I had it ; I think the crowd thought the same, I think my corner thought the same.

“When it’s that tight it’s just down to opinion. This time it was her. She’s 33, I’m only 18. I’m not even angry, I’m just a bit upset.”

Motherwell boxer Stephen Newns came close to at least a bronze medal, but lost his quarterfinal bout against Fiji’s Winston Hill by a split decision.

Disappointment was also keenly felt in netball as former Holy Cross pupil Bethan Goodwin raced off the court on Tuesday, having unfortunately missed two penalty shots that would have given Scotland a draw against Malawi, who instead triumphed 51-49.

The Thistles then lost 57-37 against Uganda on Wednesday.

Goodwin is one of six players from the South Lanarkshire area to be competing in netball.

The Thistles had started their campaign with a 74-28 defeat against England, and followed that up with a 51-47 triumph over Wales on Saturday.

On Monday Scotland lost 60-29 to New Zealand, before that narrow defeat to Malawi.

Strathaven swimmer Corrie Scott was also left empty-handed this time around following her bronze medal in 2014.

Scott (21) was a reserve for the 50m breaststroke final after finishing outside of the qualifying places in the semi-final. Corrie also finished seventh in the 100m breaststroke semi-finals.

Her last hope of a medal arrived in the 4 x 100m medley relay final, but Team Scotland didn’t make it.

Corrie was joined by Kathleen Dawson, Keanna Macinnes and Lucy Hope, but finished fifth behind gold medallists Australia, Canada (silver), Wales (bronze) and fourth-placed England.
