Commuters in Hamilton are bracing themselves for more than 19 weeks of roadworks.

Gas distribution company SGN will begin work next week to upgrade the gas supply network in the town’s Bothwell Road.

Officials say the works are part of a £367,000 investment to upgrade the gas network.

This essential work involves the replacement of old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe.

SGN project manager David Black said: “A lot of planning has gone into this project and we’ll be doing everything we can to limit disruption.”

Commuters in Hamilton are set to face 19 weeks of roadworks misery as essential gas works take place.

Gas distribution company SGN will shortly be starting work to upgrade the gas supply network in Bothwell Road, Hamilton.

Officials say the works are part of a £367,000 investment to upgrade the gas network in the area.

This essential work involves the replacement of old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.

Following discussions with South Lanarkshire Council, the project will start on Monday, October 15, and last approximately 19 weeks.

SGN say from Monday, October 15, they will be working in Bothwell Road from its junction with Arthur Street progressing north to its junction with May Street.

The work there will last around seven weeks and for safety reasons they will need to close the nearside lane in Bothwell Road’s northbound carriageway.

This lane closure will be in small sections progressing northward with their work.

After a short break for Christmas and the New Year, the works will continue to Bothwell Road near the entrance to the industrial estate opposite Hamilton Race Course.

For the remaining seven weeks of the project, they will be working in various locations in Bothwell Road between May Street and Candymill Lane.

Again, the nearside lane in Bothwell Road’s northbound carriageway will be closed in the sections they will be working in.

The only exception is for a short phase of work at the beginning of February 2019.

At the beginning of this phase, the nearside lanes will be closed in both carriageways.

The nearside and offside lanes in both carriageways will then reopen towards the end of this phase of work.

SGN project manager David Black said: “A lot of planning has gone into this project and we’ll be doing everything we can to limit disruption.

“We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating, however, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.

“This means once the work has been completed, Hamilton homes and businesses will enjoy the benefits of a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.”
