Bot­tle at­tack thug is spared jail

A man has avoided prison af­ter a bot­tle at­tack in a Hamil­ton bar.

Shayne Brown (20), of Cly­des­dale Av­enue, Hamil­ton, ap­peared at the town’s sher­iff court. He ad­mit­ted as­sault­ing Scott Mci­nall to his se­vere in­jury and per­ma­nent dis­fig­ure­ment in Bar Mi­lano at the Avon­bridge Ho­tel on No­vem­ber 4 last year.

Pros­e­cu­tor Michael Mac­in­tosh, said there was a“back­ground of an­i­mos­ity” be­tween Brown and Mr Mci­nall (28).

The fis­cal added:“it’s sug­gested that this is in re­spect of un­paid debts.

“CCTV showed the ac­cused ap­proach Mr Mci­nall within the bar and strike him two blows to the right side of the head with what ap­pears to be a glass bot­tle.

“The ac­cused im­me­di­ately turned and left the area.”

The vic­tim suf­fered two cuts of 4cm and 2cm. These were closed with nine stitches and med­i­cal opin­ion is Mr Mci­nall will be left with a small scar.

De­fence agent Jack­son Bate­man said Brown holds down a full-time job and has only one pre­vi­ous con­vic­tion, for breach of the peace.

Sher­iff David Bicket im­posed a com­mu­nity pay­back order as an al­ter­na­tive to cus­tody. Brown will be su­per­vised for 18 months and must do 230 hours of un­paid com­mu­nity work.
