MSP hears about past glories and future plans

Margaret Mitchell briefed by Friends of Park

Hamilton Advertiser - - ALL ABOUT LANARKSHIRE - Stefanie Mccourt

Friends of Stonehouse Park welcomed a visit from Central Scotland MSP Margaret

Mitchell recently.

Mrs Mitchell learnt that the park was once a popular and busy open space, housing a Category B listed bandstand, a boating pond, and Scotland’s longest chute.

While the chute has been redesigned and the boating pond removed in favour of a children’s play area, the 100-year-old bandstand still takes pride of place in the centre of the park.

Where the park was previously falling into disrepair, the group have been working hard to renovate the bandstand and the rest of the park to help make it the beating heart of the community.

Mrs Mitchell met with FOSP’S David Wilson and Karen Kelly, who told her about the amazing progress on the maintenance and restoration of the park since 2015.

With grand plans in place, a feasibility study and support from various sources including South Lanarkshire Council, FOSP hope to be able to redevelop the main pavilion and bandstand, all the way down to the River Avon which runs along the park’s northern perimeter.

In the meantime, the park now hosts regular events for all ages. These include the upcoming Halloween party.

Mrs Mitchell, said: “There is something really special about Alexander Hamilton Memorial Park and it would have been such a shame for it to have fallen into neglect.

“So I heartily congratulate David, Karen, and all of the Friends of Stonehouse Park, on their amazing efforts.

“David and Karen’s enthusiasm is infectious and not only does the park now look fantastic but there is clearly much more to come.

“Furthermore there is terrific potential for the park and with its large open spaces it could easily accommodate new sporting facilities or even allotments.

“Few parks hold the charm and history of Stonehouse Park and I really look forward to seeing the pavilion, and bandstand in particular, renovated to active community hubs.”
