Easton gets on his bike in fitness bid

-

Brian Easton admits an ankle injury led to a love of cycling – even if he was then trolled by a young Hamilton team-mate.

Jogging during lockdown alerted Easton to a problem with his ankle, which required surgery that will rule him out of action until September at the earliest.

So the big defender started cycling instead and developed a passion for it.

He said:“just at the start of lockdown I had been jogging on the streets in the south side of Glasgow, trying to keep fit, and it came on gradually, but quite quickly got to the point where my ankle was just too sore to jog.

“When I spoke to the consultant they recommended surgery, but they weren’t doing it at the time because of Covid, so I had to wait for all of that to open back up, which was a bit frustrating.”

He added:“i did quite a lot of cycling over lockdown and I quite enjoyed that.

“It’s not ideal, but it has managed to keep me at a certain level of fitness. It’s not like I’ve been doing nothing for two months, and I kept myself in decent enough shape.

“I wasn’t an avid cyclist before, but I was really enjoying it and started to add more miles each day, finding all the good cycle routes to do, so that might be something I continue to do now.

“There were days when I was out for hours at a time and coming home knackered.

“I think my record was about 70km or something, which I thought was pretty decent until I went in and spoke to my team-mate Ross Cunningham, who was talking about his 140km cycles and put me to shame right away – but I’m still pretty proud of it, to be fair!

“Hopefully cycling will help. I can maybe even get back a bit sooner and fitter than I would have been.”
