WINES OF THE MONTH
What you should be sipping in September
2014 Efe Rosado, Monastrell, Bodegas los Frailes, Valencia, Spain, £10.95: This rosé has great depth of colour, with a palate that is dry and pure. Aromas of wild raspberries and redcurrants play against an herbal backdrop. Utterly refreshing, the wine’s graceful texture is balanced by red-cherry acidity, with notes of strawberry on the midpalate. It has enough fruit and weight to be brilliantly food-friendly.
2016 Louro do Bolo, Bodegas Rafael Palacios, Valdeorras, Spain, £19.95: Godello is a white grape variety that is undergoing a great renaissance. It combines the structure of white Burgundy with the minerality of an Albariño. This full-flavoured, rounded example has texture and energy. A big ripe mouthful with undeniable richness and perfect balance, it would be a wonderful match with Susie’s Salmorejo.
2016 Joven de Silos, Cillar de Silos, Ribera del Duero Spain, £8.13: Cillar de Silos only use the highest quality grapes to make this Tempranillobased wine from Spain’s Ribera del Duero. It spends no time in oak and has a spicy, herbal, tobacco-like character accompanied by ripe strawberry and red cherry, making it an ideal match for the Salmorejo’s herbs, tomato and ham.
