MEMBERS of a Hindu temple have marked two special occasions.

Worshippers at Adhya Shakti Mataji Temple, in High Road, Cowley, coupled a celebration of the 68th anniversary of India’s independence with Janamashtami, Lord Krishna’s birthday.

The festivities began at 9pm on Sunday with patriotic songs, followed at about 10.30pm by a grand salute and the Indian national anthem.

The evening ended with Arti, the festival of light, and the distribution of sweets, freshly prepared at the temple.

One of the highlights of the evening was the inclusion of a santoor, a traditional Indian musical instrument, which is very rare.
