Eastcote fall just short in exciting encounter
HELEN Williams and Lucy Allen both scored as Eastcote Ladies fell marginally short of victory in their opening match of the season.
In an exciting encounter at the Eastro, Eastcote took the initiative, with Williams forcing an early save from the visiting Oxford Hawks goalkeeper.
The Hawks’ hit back with a goal, however, setting off a quickfire phase of goals, with Eastcote equalising through Williams, before Oxford regained their lead – both from corners.
Allen finished early off a superb team move in the second half, before another corner provided the pivotal chance for the Hawks to secure victory.
Meanwhile, the men won their final pre-season match 5-0 against Woking, taking the lead through Peter Brooks, before Alex Stobbart and David Cooper helped complete the emphatic win.
Captain Stobbart will be relieved to have scored, after bringing himself off the bench to take a penalty and missing.
Meanwhile, Nina Haydon-Guppy put in a lively performance as Old Merchant Taylors’ Duchesses began life in Middlesex Women’s League Division Two with an opening- day 7-0 win against Old Uxonians. Haydon-Guppy scored twice in the first half, either side of a Michelle Coupar effort.
Coupar added her second minutes after the break, before player-coach Dawn Whitmore struck twice.
Coupar rounded off the victory with her third in the dying embers of the match to put the Duchesses top of the table.
Oli Wilkins scored a brace to help OMT’s men to a 4-1 win in their pre-season match against West Hampstead thirds.
After a drab first half, the game burst into life. Wilkins scored, before Hampstead retaliated from a short corner to quickly level the scores.
A further strike from Wilkins, who also gained an assist, helped OMT to victory.
