Ut­t­ley shows great spirit

HILLING­DON Gym­nas­tics Club’s Alex Ut­t­ley has re­ceived the Spirit of Gym­nas­tics ac­co­lade at the an­nual Nik Stu­art Foun­da­tion Awards.

The for­mer Spel­bound mem­ber (pic­tured), the ac­ro­bat win­ners of TV’s Bri­tain’s Got Tal­ent in 2010, was given the award in recog­ni­tion of his de­vo­tion, achieve­ment and pos­i­tive at­ti­tude to­wards the sport.

Ut­t­ley is cur­rently a coach at Botwell Green Sports and Leisure Cen­tre and has rep­re­sented Great Bri­tain mul­ti­ple times in World and Euro­pean cham­pi­onships.

The Nik Stu­art Foun­da­tion was in­au­gu­rated in 2003 in Stu­art’s mem­ory to ob­serve his ex­am­ple in the fel­low­ship and cul­ture of gym­nas­tics, with the ethos and aim to be­friend, serve, en­cour­age, help, hon­our and award ex­cep­tional per­sons as­so­ci­ated with the many facets of gym­nas­tics.

In 1956, Stu­art be­came Bri­tish Cham­pion, a ti­tle he re­tained for the next nine years, and in 1962 he re­ceived an MBE, be­fore be­com­ing na­tional coach for the Bri­tish Am­a­teur Gym­nas­tics As­so­ci­a­tion.
