TENNIS Jack takes first title
JACK MacFarlane is celebrating his first international tennis title after beating a handful of Asia’s top players on his way to winning the AGS Championship in Jakarta.
The Ruislip teenager, who trains at the JTC academy at Virgin Northwood, was the number four seed in Indonesia and lost just two sets as he claimed his maiden title last week.
The 16-year-old played out some tough fixtures culminating in a 6-2 6-3 victory in the final over Indonesian number three seed Achad Imam Maruf.
MacFarlane singled out his serve as the key factor to his success as the youngster limited his opponents’ opportunities in return games throughout the tournament.
“I didn’t drop my serve in either the semifinal or the final,” he said. “Against top players that really boosts your confidence.”
After finishing last season ranked number two in the UK at under 16 level, MacFarlane is enhancing his pedigree even further this year and adds this trophy to the doubles titles he won on home soil and in Estonia over the summer.
MacFarlane was accompanied on his trip by coach David Felgate, who previously tutored former British number one Tim Henman.
The teenager, who is currently still competing in south-east Asia, will return home for a few weeks training at Northwood before a number of events across Europe over the coming months.
