Win-win situation for captains new and old

Harefield Gazette - - MOTORS -

NEW Northwood Golf Club captain Nick Lines opened his year at the helm by winning his own drive-in Stableford event last week.

Lines, team-mates Sean Maxwell and Adam Penhale, and vicecaptain Sean Cunningham scored 95 points to claim victory.

More than 20 former captains and a large group of members watched outgoing skipper Stephen Lee putt out on the 18th, before honouring his successor by escorting him to the first tee.

Lines adhered to club tradition by smashing a superb drive straight down the fairway to officially open his tenure, before returning to the clubhouse to fulfil some of his new responsibilities, starting with handing out the competition prizes.

He was joined by new ladies captain, Jayne Burden – who had held her own drive a few days previously – and his wife, Bryony, as he led more than 100 members and guests into lunch.

Lines believes the club can add to its impressive trophy haul in recent times as long as the interest across every age group is maintained and developed.

Northwood were 2014 county champions and currently hold five of the seven titles available to them.

Lines’ drive raised more than £600 for his chosen charity for the year, Cancer Research UK, which was netted by members estimating how far his opening drive would travel.

The winner, coincidentally perhaps, was Stephen Lee.
