Time runs out as Eastcote chase point

Harefield Gazette - - MOTORS -

EASTCOTE suffered their first defeat of the season when a late fight-back at Oxford came up short on Saturday.

This battle of second versus third always looked likely to be close, but the visitors were on the back foot from the start and a finish from a tight angle and a deflected short corner soon had Oxford 2-0 to the good.

Kevin Haigh hit back shortly before half-time to cut the arrears to one, but the hosts stretched their lead to three with two further goals after the resumption.

Haigh’s second goal and one from David Cooper threatened to pinch a point for Eastcote, but time ran out on them. As a result, they dropped to fourth while Oxford reached the summit.

Eastcote will hope to resume winning ways on Saturday at home to struggling Sonning.

At the other end of the table, there was better news for Old Merchant Taylors’, who enjoyed their first win of the campaign at the expense of Marlow.

They left it late to win a match of few chances; there were just five minutes left on the clock when the ball fell to Ed Richards on the penalty spot and he slotted it between the visiting keeper’s legs for the only goal of the game.

OMTs will attempt to make it two wins on the spin when they travel to PHC Chiswick this weekend.

In Middlesex Division Two, there was no joy for Old Uxonians Ladies, who lost 3-1 at Imperial Medical.
