Man was ar­rested after Armistice Day evac­u­a­tion in town

A MAN who was ar­rested on Armistice Day after shop­pers were evac­u­ated from Uxbridge town cen­tre has been re­leased on bail. cer­e­mony out­side the civic cen­tre across the street.

Alarms and a mes­sage over the pub­lic ad­dress sys­tem told shop­pers in the shop­ping cen­tre to evac­u­ate the build­ing.

Some said they were un­aware of why they were be­ing told to leave.

Yvonne Ja­nis, 79, from Hayes, was among those shop­ping when she saw po­lice snif­fer dogs.

“Peo­ple were calm,” she said.

San­dra Jones, 62, of

very Wind­mill Road, Ruis­lip Manor, was among the crowd who had gath­ered out­side Hilling­don Civic Cen­tre for the cer­e­mony.

She said: “All the po­lice were here.

“I was wait­ing to get to my car on my way home when I saw all the po­lice.

“I wouldn’t have thought there would be such a po­lice pres­ence for a fire.” Shop­pers were able to re-en­ter the shop­ping cen­tre and its car park at around 2pm.
