Eastcote close the gap with league leaders
Win leaves them only two points behind Oxford Hawks
MBBO DIVISION ONE Eastcote 4 Maidenhead 0 KEVIN Haigh continued his fine scoring form by grabbing a double against Maidenhead as Eastcote ran out 4-0 winners on Saturday.
The league’s top scorer struck the opener following a quick Eastcote break before captain Alex Stobbart added a second with a reverse stick shot.
Haigh scored his second after a string of short corners before Sam Forman capped off the win with a skillful run and unnerving finish.
The result keeps Eastcote third in MBBO Division One and only two points behind league leaders Oxford Hawks ahead of their visit to Staines seconds on Saturday.
In the same division, Henry Stuttaford scored twice as Old Merchant Taylors’ recorded a 3-1 victory over Wallingford.
George Smith fired home the hosts’ other goal as OMTs’ lifted themselves into ninth spot ahead of their trip to Oxford seconds at the weekend.
Eastcote seconds beat Newbury and Thatcham 3-0 in the England Hockey National Plate on Sunday as two goals from David Cooper and one from Chris Akhurst put them into the next round.
Meanwhile, a Marissa Gresophon strike couldn’t stop Eastcote Ladies slipping to a 2-1 defeat at Oxford Hawks.
Gresophon’s goal proved to be nothing but a consolation following a good move from a penalty corner towards the end of the match.
The Hawks had taken the lead just before half time with a scrappy goal and doubled their advantage shortly after the interval.
Eastcote fought hard to the end but were unable to come away with their share of the spoils and sit in eighth place just four points off the bottom of the table.
Old Merchant Taylors’ Duchesses earned a 1-1 draw at British Airways Hayes Ladies seconds in Middlesex Division Two at the weekend.
They remain fifth in the table ahead of hosting neighbours Old Uxonians Ladies, who were thumped 12-0 by Staines Ladies’ thirds, on Saturday.
