Drawing on illustrator’s Gruffalo experience

Harefield Gazette - - NEWS -

THE illustrator of a much-loved story read to children in Hillingdon before signing books with a unique drawing.

Axel Scheffler, award-winning illustrator of The Gruffalo, visited four to 10-year-olds at ACS Hillingdon International School, in Vine Lane.

The Hamburg-born artist is best known for his collaboration with author Julia Donaldson on The Gruffalo, which has sold more than five million copies worldwide and has been translated into 50 languages.

Mr Scheffler drew illustrations while he was reading to the children, to demonstrate how he works, and how his drawings change during the editing process.

He also signed and illustrated books for the children to take away as a special memento of the visit.

Lower School Librarian Peggy Travers said: “The signing was very special as Axel kindly drew a character in each book signed. Seeing him draw a huge Gruffalo during a session was also very special.”
