What is the cost of a coun­cil u-turn?

MANY peo­ple will know that I have been closely fol­low­ing the de­vel­op­ment pro­pos­als for the ex-Ex­press Dairy site, in South Ruis­lip.

How­ever, in spite of this I was ab­so­lutely amazed to read in last week’s Gazette that the de­vel­op­ers will pay Hilling­don Coun­cil £2.7mil­lion and, in ad­di­tion, they would also pay for Vic­to­ria Road and Long Drive to be widened (how? There’s lit­tle room for any sig­nif­i­cant widen­ing), new pedes­trian walk­ways be­tween South Ruis­lip Sta­tion and the new de­vel­op­ment, more traf­fic lights, etc.

When con­sid­er­ing the de­vel­oper’s orig­i­nal ap­pli­ca­tion for plan­ning ap­proval, Hilling­don Coun­cil’s chief plan­ning of­fi­cer said in his re­port ‘that he could not rec­om­mend the de­vel­oper’s pro­pos­als be ac­cepted on the grounds that is­sues re­lat­ing to re­tail im­pact, high­ways, noise, out­look and land­scap­ing could be sat­is­fac­to­rily mit­i­gated via con­di­tion’ and pre­sum­ably be­cause
