Boxing champ joins sporty open day

CURA, the char­ity which sup­ports peo­ple with Breast Can­cer in Hilling­don and neigh­bour­ing lo­cal ar­eas, is hold­ing its Spring Ball on Satur­day, April 25.

The black tie ball will take place at Moor Park Man­sion in Rick­mansworth and raise funds for the char­ity so it can of­fer grants to breast can­cer pa­tients of limited fi­nan­cial means.

En­ter­tain­ment will be pro­vided through live mu­sic, ta­ble-top magic, si­lent auc­tion and a casino.

Tick­ets cost £100 which in­cludes din­ner, and £10 for the evening re­cep­tion.

The 2014 Euro­pean su­per mid­dleweight cham­pion will visit the cen­tre in East Av­enue, Hayes on Sun­day, April 12 in a bid to in­spire young kids to get fit.

The boxer from Ham­mer­smith is the for­mer Com­mon­wealth and Bri­tish ti­tle­holder in the Su­per Mid­dleweight di­vi­sion and will be par­tic­i­pat­ing in a range of ac­tiv­i­ties from mid­day to 5pm, with the aim of en­cour­ag­ing chil­dren to learn ways to ex­er­cise.

Mr Groves said: “I’m de­lighted to be in­volved and re­ally look­ing for­ward to the day. I’m hop­ing to meet fu­ture box­ers of course, but all sports are fan­tas­tic and I hope to see many young faces hav­ing fun try­ing new ac­tiv­i­ties.”

Botwell Green Cen­tre, which is run by the char­i­ta­ble so­cial en­ter­prise GLL, has also or­gan­ised a soc­cer ses­sion with QPR Soc­cer School from mid­day to 1pm and a dance class by Pas­sion Dance Academy from 1pm to 2pm.

Young­sters can en­joy the pool party be­tween 1pm and 4pm and a karate class from 2pm to 3pm, as well as a Get Crafty ses­sion in the crèche for all ages. Two multi-sports ses­sions will be tak­ing place from 3pm to 4pm and 4pm to 5pm and there will also be read­ing ses­sions in the li­brary and the ju­nior gym will be open for those aged 11 to 15 years.

There is free ice cream be­tween 4pm and 5pm for ev­ery­one who has taken part, with each par­tic­i­pant re­ceiv­ing a goody bag.

Vis­i­tors to the open day can par­tic­i­pate in ac­tiv­i­ties from as lit­tle as £1. Those be­com­ing mem­bers of Botwell Green Sports and Leisure Cen­tre will only have to pay a £1 join­ing fee if they join on the day.
