Illegal immigrants found in lorry
A LORRY driver delivering cars to a dealership in West Drayton got a shock when he realised he was unwittingly carrying suspected illegal immigrants.
The driver had been on his way to the Tesla Store & Service Centre, in Horton Road, at around 12.40pm on Wednesday, March 25 when he realised something was wrong and called police.
Officers searched his articulated vehicle and found four men inside, who were arrested on suspicion of immigration offences and handed over to the UK Border Agency.
The driver was not arrested.
Passer-by Frank Gerard, 46, said a crowd of people gathered to film what was happening on their mobile phones.
He added: “A lot of ambulances and police were there. There were about eight or nine ambulances, as well as police vans and other white vans. You couldn’t get past because there were so many vehicles there.”
Mr Gerard, of Parkway, Uxbridge, said: “It wasn’t until afterwards that I thought, ‘It’s amazing how it’s allowed to happen, really’.”
Another member of the public, who wished to remain unnamed, said: “It caused a bit of disruption because there were umpteen cars out there – the police and ambulance and goodness knows what else.”
A Tesla spokeswoman said all of the company’s drivers were employed by a third-party firm.
