BLOOM WITH A VIEW:
Mayor launches annual contest
GREEN-FINGERED residents, businesses, schools and community groups are being invited to don their gardening gloves for the annual Hillingdon in Bloom competition.
The horticultural contest encourages participants to improve their environment through imaginative use of flowers, trees, shrubs and landscaping. Entrants will be judged in 18 categories, from best window box to best residential street.
Hillingdon Council, which has organised the event, hopes a strong performance will boost the borough’s chances in two prestigious competitions run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Last year, Hillingdon triumphed at London in Bloom, being given Gold status in the large city category, before going on to win SilverGilt at the national Britain in Bloom awards.
Councillor Jonathan Bianco, cabinet member for finance, property and business services, said: “I am delighted to announce that the ever- popular Hillingdon in Bloom competition has returned for 2015.
“It gives local people of all ages the opportunity to brighten up the borough’s green spaces with horticulture, helping to make us the pride of London and beyond.
“Whether you are a novice gardener or an expert, everyone is very welcome to enter, and I look forward to touring the borough in July to see what has been grown this year.”
This year’s competition was launched by Hillingdon mayor Councillor Catherine Dann on Tuesday, April 14, during National Gardening Week, at the Rural Activities Garden Centre, in West Drayton Road, Hillingdon.
Judging will take place in July, before the winners are announced at the Autumn Show Fruit and
Vegetable competition, held in September at the Civic Centre, in High Street, Uxbridge.
