McDonnell pledges to battle austerity
Labour candidate wins seat for fifth time running
JOHN McDonnell pledged to wage war on austerity as he was returned to parliament as Labour MP for Hayes & Harlington in the early hours of last Friday.
The outspoken MP retained his seat, which he has held since 1997, with 26,843 votes – 59.6% of the constituency total.
In a speech made after the results were announced, Mr McDonnell said: “The first time I was elected, in ’97, was one of the proudest moments of my life and it is with such pride that I now look back on the fourth occasion I’ve been re-elected.
“What we showed in Hayes and Harlington today is the diversity of our communities coming together, in peace and harmony, to have an election which produced a result which I think reflects the views of our local people. And we wanted change.
“I will work in parliament with any political party, any individual MP, that will oppose austerity, because this is about the protection of some of the most vulnerable within our community.”
Mr McDonnell said he expected neighbouring MP Boris Johnson, newly elected to Uxbridge and South Ruislip, to show solidarity in opposing a third Heathrow runway and would “join with me in lying down in front of those bulldozers if they come”.
The final count was announced at Brunel University, in Kingston Lane, Uxbridge, at around 4am on Friday – the first of three hotly-awaited constituency results.
Voter turnout for the constituency was 60.37% – up from 57.46% in 2010.
The Conservatives’ Pearl Lewis was runnerup, with 11,143 votes; UKIP’s Cliff Dixon recorded 5,388; Liberal Democrat Satnam Khalsa 888; and the Green party’s Alick Munro, 794. The number of spoiled votes was 142.
Ms Lewis said: “Congratulations, of course, to John in his next few years as an MP and keeping the seat warm for the future.” If your boiler isn’t heating as it should, Uxbridge heating experts rightgas are on hand to fix it for you.
