Like our 100,000 supporters, Back Heathrow believes increased runway capacity at the UK’s hub airport is right for local people and our communities. We accept that it will be the Airports Commission that makes this decision. What we can’t accept is the position being taken by those opposed to expansion who say no matter what the commission says or our Government decides, they will not let Heathrow grow. At the Airports Commission public meeting in December 2014 John McDonnell, the MP for Hayes and Harlington, said if Heathrow is given the go-ahead “our community will make sure it is not deliverable”. He was backed by Zac Goldsmith, the MP for Richmond Park, who said “Heathrow expansion cannot and will not happen”. In a democracy the majority view must surely be respected. To seek to impose the will of a vocal minority on a majority that has taken a look at the issues and on balance wants growth to take place is just plain wrong. Our government must ensure local people and communities who support Heathrow are allowed to make themselves heard.
