ROOKIE boss Tristan Lewis thinks honesty is the best policy to move Hayes & Yeading United forward as a club.

Lewis (pictured) is taking his first steps into management after being promoted to the top job following the departure of f Phil B Babb.bb

He is in the process of rebuilding the team for another crack at the Conference South next season and hoping to improve on the relegation battles of recent years.

The likes of former AFC Wimbledon defender Yado Mambo and young Fulham goalkeeper Magnus Norman have already been added to the ranks by Lewis.

Having worked as right-hand man to first Nas Bashir and then Babb at Hayes & Yeading, Lewis is getting used to life as number one at York Road.

It is a steep learning curve but the United supremo admits one approach has already served him well during his recruitment drive this summer.

He said: “It’s been interesting to see it from a different angle as manager. The league is going to be really difficult next year but I think you’ve got to relish that.

“One thing I have learnt, perhaps the biggest and best thing, is to be honest with players as a manager. We can’t compete with some of the big spenders, but we know that and we don’t try.

“I think players appreciate that I’m honest with them. Luke Williams re-signed because he knows I’ll be honest with him. I’ve got players who want to buy into what I want to do.

“We’re trying to build something for the future and not just something that’s going to get us by next year.

“The biggest piece of the jigsaw is the centre forward. We’re not going to rush out and get someone – we want to make sure we get the right player.

“We’ve got a couple of players on the horizon, one of whom has gone on holiday, but we know where we are with it all.

“We can’t pay the same money some other clubs can and I’ve got to protect the interest of the football club as well.

“We aren’t dealing in contracts. Some teams go around splashing cash and taking players from you, but that’s the nature of where we are. I want a group that starts the season and finishes the season.”

Hayes & Yeading United are already filling up their pre-season fixture schedule and will play Grays Athletic and Bedfont as well as Slough and Egham.
