Remarkable Games for young water polo side
Half the side had only learned sport in past few months
HILLINGDON U15s’ water polo side produced a wonderful team ethic to finish in fourth place in the London Youth Games last weekend.
The team finished in second place in the group stage, before falling short in the semi-finals to Southwark 9-3, then subsequently missing out in the third-place play-offs to Croydon.
But despite falling short in the latter stages, the side produced some remarkable performances to qualify from the group stage, as half the side had only learned the sport in the past few months.
And Hillingdon defied the odds to even qualify after being matched in the more difficult group of the two.
After completing narrow wins against Richmond 6-5, Haringey 12-9 and Southwark 8-7, the underdogs fell just short against Croydon 4-7 to finish as runnersup.
And they made the most of their momentum to beat Hackney 12-6 in the quarter-finals, before falling to a valiant defeat in the semis and third-place play-offs.
The side comprised a mix of both girls and boys between the ages of seven and 10 and included Nick Birch, Ilyas Raja, Sam Roberts, David Reynard, Elana Keiles, Joanna Psoinos, Samir Garnie, Saharla Warsame, Yalin Gulen, Michael Seagroatt, Toby Roberts and Patrick Brown.
This year, Hillingdon fielded a very young team and are already looking forward to returning next year with a stronger team for a year’s worth of extra training.
Any child who is a good swimmer and is aged 12 or over is welcome to take part in a free water polo trial on Saturday afternoons during term time at Uxbridge Pool.
