Runway protest at Heathrow
NINE people were arrested after demonstrators stormed the north runway at Heathrow at 3.45am on Monday.
Members of the anti-airport expansion group Plane Stupid staged a sit-in by chaining themselves to objects, resulting in delays and flight cancellations.
Ella Gilbert, one of the activists on the runway, said: “Building more runways goes against everything we’re being told by scientists and experts on climate change.
“This would massively increase carbon emissions exactly when we need to massively reduce them, that’s why we’re here.
“No ifs, no buts, no third runway. And we mean it,”
She said protesters are not saying “everybody who wants to fly is a bad person” but blamed frequent fliers who the group blames for fuelling expansion.
The Metropolitan Police said: “There were 13 protesters in total on the north runway. Nine were arrested on suspicion of Aviation Act offences and taken into custody. The remaining protesters were moved to a safe area.”
Heathrow said it would work closely with police to ensure the safety of passengers, employees and protesters.
