Ex-Army man moves into Tower of London as he starts Beefeater job
A FORMER Army man from Ruislip is moving to the Tower of London after being appointed as a Beefeater.
Gary Thynne has been made a Yeoman Warder, entitling him to live at the Tower with his wife Tamika, alongside 36 other guards and their families.
He takes up the iconic role after 23 years of distinguished service in the Army.
Gary served with the Royal Artillery in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Iraq, Afghanistan and the former Yugoslavia among others.
He also served with the Metropolitan Police before being offered his new role at the Tower of London.
Gary said: “Being a Yeoman Warder is my dream job and waking up on my birthday at the Tower of London to start my first day here was incredible.
“Looking over the river to see the Shard and HMS Belfast from a window at the Tower – there’s nothing quite like it!
“I’ve been concentrating on learning the story at the moment and exploring some of the hidden gems of the Tower, such as the peacefulness of the Cradle Tower.”
The Yeoman Warders are descended from the ancient band of warders who guarded the gates and royal prisoners early in the Tower’s history.

Today they combine their traditional ceremonial role with a love of history to make the past come to life for visitors.
Over the next few months, Yeoman Warder Thynne will learn word-for-word The Story – the script of the famous Yeoman Warder Tour – before being allowed to lead a tour himself.
