Gary takes iconic Tower role

Ex-Army man moves into Tower of Lon­don as he starts Beefeater job

A FOR­MER Army man from Ruis­lip is mov­ing to the Tower of Lon­don af­ter be­ing ap­pointed as a Beefeater.

Gary Thynne has been made a Yeo­man Warder, en­ti­tling him to live at the Tower with his wife Tamika, along­side 36 other guards and their fam­i­lies.

He takes up the iconic role af­ter 23 years of distin­guished ser­vice in the Army.

Gary served with the Royal Ar­tillery in North­ern Ire­land, Cyprus, Iraq, Afghanistan and the for­mer Yu­goslavia among oth­ers.

He also served with the Metropoli­tan Po­lice be­fore be­ing of­fered his new role at the Tower of Lon­don.

Gary said: “Be­ing a Yeo­man Warder is my dream job and wak­ing up on my birth­day at the Tower of Lon­don to start my first day here was in­cred­i­ble.

“Look­ing over the river to see the Shard and HMS Belfast from a win­dow at the Tower – there’s noth­ing quite like it!

“I’ve been con­cen­trat­ing on learn­ing the story at the mo­ment and ex­plor­ing some of the hid­den gems of the Tower, such as the peace­ful­ness of the Cra­dle Tower.”

The Yeo­man Warders are de­scended from the an­cient band of warders who guarded the gates and royal pris­on­ers early in the Tower’s history.

Over the next few months, Yeo­man Warder Thynne will learn word-for-word The Story – the script of the fa­mous Yeo­man Warder Tour – be­fore be­ing al­lowed to lead a tour him­self.
