Stu­dents meet up at Down­ing Street

FOUR past and present Uxbridge Col­lege stu­dents met au­thor Bali Rai at a re­cep­tion at 11 Down­ing Street.

Tai Jin James Ong, Re­becca Mor­gan, Samima Be­gum and Aidin Kaz­enizadeh vis­ited the Chan­cel­lor of the Ex­che­quer’s of­fi­cial res­i­dence in Lon­don on Wed­nes­day, Septem­ber 9 af­ter com­plet­ing the Six Book Chal­lenge.

The chal­lenge, which ran in June, is an ini­tia­tive from na­tional char­ity The Read­ing Agency, which aims to make peo­ple of all ages feel more con­fi­dence about

The Uxbridge Gazette Se­ries read­ing and im­prove their lit­er­acy.

The event at Down­ing Street was to launch the 2015-16 chal­lenge, now re­named Read­ing Ahead, and un­veil the char­ity’s re­port to lit­er­acy pol­i­cy­mak­ers in­clud­ing Skills Min­is­ter Nick Boles MP.

The chal­lenge is part of the cur­ricu­lum at Uxbridge Col­lege and 204 stu­dents com­pleted it this year.

Col­lege prin­ci­pal Laraine Smith said: “It has been a huge suc­cess for us, en­gag­ing a large num­ber of stu­dents in ex­ten­sive read­ing.”
