Run­ners in Heathrow chal­lenge

THREE hun­dred run­ners have taken part in the first re­lay marathon on Heathrow Air­port’s north­ern run­way. The event got un­der way at at the stroke of mid­night on Satur­day, Septem­ber 12, and saw ea­ger run­ners from Bor­der Force, the Met Po­lice, Bri­tish Air­ways, Vir­gin At­lantic, Heathrow Ex­press and the air­port tak­ing on the chal­lenge.

A live band as­sem­bled to en­sure run­ners didn’t flag and 100 vol­un­teers shunned their bed­time to stand on the side­lines at the run­way and sound en­cour­age­ment.

A Heathrow spokes­woman de­scribed the at­mos­phere on the night as “elec­tric” and said more than £31,600 has been raised so far for char­ity.

Those ben­e­fit­ing are the Heathrow Com­mu­nity Fund, Ox­fam, Fly­ing Start and Help for He­roes.
