Autumnal colours a big attraction at show
HAREFIELD Horticultural Society’s autumn show was ‘bright with colour and buzzing with activity’ earlier in the month.
An array of flowers, pot plants, cacti and neat groups of vegetables and fruit were carefully and attractively displayed for the judges to consider and everyone to admire.
Cakes, biscuits, preserves and pickles were enjoyed as part of the domestic section.
Rosa Crockett, committee member of the society thought the show was a ‘great success’.
She said: “There was a large number of entries across all the sections, including the young people’s sections, and the show was very well attended by villagers and visitors throughout the afternoon.
“The horticultural shows in Harefield are very much part of our village tradition.”
The fun section drew smiles at the unusually shaped vegetables and some gasps at the heaviest, including a 98lb pumpkin.
Jean Nevin took the People’s Choice prize, drawing in the most audience votes for her produce arrangement.
To end the afternoon, the chairman Peter Mitchell presented cups, shields and medals to the winners.
Young people were encouraged to take part, with several entries from Harefield Brownies and Harefield Gardening Club.
