Puz­zle and rid­dles – no prob­lem

CHIL­DREN at White­hall In­fant School in Uxbridge, spent a day do­ing some prac­ti­cal prob­lem solv­ing last week.

The day was or­gan­ised by maths co-or­di­na­tor Kate Reade and run by The Happy Puz­zle Com­pany.

Ms Reade said: “Maths isn’t just about num­bers and it is great to have the op­por­tu­nity to look at maths in a dif­fer­ent con­text.

“The chil­dren learnt im­por­tant skills about not giv­ing up and work­ing to­gether to solve some tricky puz­zles.”

The Happy Puz­zle Com­pany runs chal­lenge days in which pre­sen­ters of­fer a chal­leng­ing se­lec­tion of puz­zles and games for chil­dren.

Pupils at White­hall in Cow­ley Road en­coun­tered a team of Learn­ing Su­per­heroes who help to de­velop the chil­dren’s mind­set. Th­ese in­cluded Con­cen­trate Con­nor, Cu­ri­ous Christina and Im­prov­ing Imo­gen.

One pupil said: We didn’t know how to do the tree puz­zle but then we worked it out to­gether.”

Head­teacher Man­jit Bringan said: “It is im­por­tant to bring the cur­ricu­lum to life by in­vest­ing in en­rich­ment ac­tiv­i­ties that can de­liver lessons in a dif­fer­ent and mem­o­rable way.”
