HILLINGDON Mayor George Cooper and wife Judith were guests of honour at a Navratri celebration in Hayes.

Navratri is a festival dedicated to the Hindu deity Durga, and is celebrated for nine nights.

The mayor and mayoress were invited to the Navnat Centre in Printing House Lane, Hayes to watch people of all ages taking part in traditional dances and performing a prayer (known as Aarti).

Live music was provided as well as food and refreshment stalls, and the centre saw more than 500 people taking part in the celebrations at its peak.

Mamta Tolia, speaking for the Navnat Association, said it was a “truly lively atmosphere”.

She added: “We we were delighted and honoured to have Honourable MP John Mcdonnell and the Mayor and Mayoress of Hillingdon attend the evening of the 16th October and join us in our celebration.”
