Pensioners’ terrifying ordeal in own home
Man, 95, dragged around house as cowardly thieves searched for money
POLICE are hunting two cowardly thieves who threw a man aged 95 to the floor in order to steal just £75.
Alfred Pegler, who is known around Harefield by his nickname ‘Hairspring’, and his wife Enid, 84, suffered a terrible ordeal when raiders tricked their way into their home, in Northwood Road, on Thursday, January 14 at 8pm.
The thieves, who were aged around 35 and 18, claimed they were police officers investigating a report from the local Neighbourhood Watch.
The couple’s son, Anthony Pegler, said: “Mum went round the side gate and was asking to see their ID when the oldest one grabbed her and shuffled her around the back to the kitchen.”
He said the man’s accomplice held Enid hostage in the kitchen while the older burglar grabbed Alfred and dragged him into the kitchen.
Anthony said: “He’s 95 and can barely walk. He was trying to get up to go to the neighbours for help and the man came back in five or so times and chucked him back to the floor.
“Mum couldn’t get to her phone to call me and whilst this was happening the older one was just turning the place upside down – every cupboard, every drawyer was pulled out. He just went through everything, upstairs and downstairs.”
After 20 frightening minutes the burglars left with £75, which was all the Peglers had in the house.
The couple rang the police and their son, who rushed over.
He said: “They were really shook up, bruised and very scared.”
Mrs Pegler said: “It’s a bit unnerving but we’ll survive. At least they didn’t have any weapons, but they wouldn’t let Alf get up and every time he tried to they kept pushing him down.
“We don’t like to keep dwelling on it. It’s happened and we have to get on – it could have been a lot worse.”
Hillingdon detectives released descriptions of the two men they are hunting.
The older man was 5ft 8ins tall and of Mediterranean appearance and his younger accomplice was white and about 5ft 2ins tall.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Hillingdon CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Mr Pegler earned his ‘Hairspring’ nickname as he was Harefield’s watch maker and repairer for many years and was often seen riding around the village on his bike.
