Paedophile spared jail for making child sex images
Nursery worker had uploaded several pictures to the internet
A WEST Drayton paedophile who worked in a children’s nursery undetected for six years has been spared jail.
Mark Curl, 55, of Bell Avenue, admitted 11 counts of making indecent images of children and one count of distributing indecent images of children, at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday January 29.
As well as working at Major Minors nursery in Goldalming, Surrey, Curl had even babysat for children there, although none of the disturbing images found in his possession related to children at the nursery.
Curl, who was found to have a child’s underwear in his bedroom, pleaded guilty to possessing images ranging in severity, including the most extreme Category A images on his mobile phone, laptop and a memory card.
The shamed nursery worker had uploaded sick images of children to the internet.
It was the uploading of these images that led to detectives tracing Curl, at the home he shared with his mother.
They entered his home with a search warrant and seized electronic items from his bedroom. He was then arrested and cautioned at his workplace in October last year.
Curl told the police at the time: “I’m going to prison aren’t I?”
Later he claimed: “I’ve never acted on anything and I’m left with children all the time – I would never abuse them.”
When asked about the underwear, he said: “It’s a fetish I suppose.”
The court was told the Curl had been of “good character of 55 years” and he provided full and frank co-operation during the police investigation as well as showing remorse.
Curl, who appeared in the dock dressed in a maroon jumper, could be seen wailing and with his head in his hands as the evidence against him was read out.
Defending Mr Burnham said: “He’s a sad and lonely man who has never had a partner and lives with his mother. This man does not fit the profile that likely poses a risk to children.”
Judge Edmunds said the images Curl was viewing showed children being “grossly and appallingly abused”.
The defendant was made subject to an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order and is banned from working with children.
He added: “The offences are so serious that nothing but a custodial sentence can be passed, but will be suspended so that your offending behaviour can be addressed.”
His sentence of 16 months in prison has been suspended for two years.
Busy Bees, which owns the Goldaming Major Minors Nursery, confirmed Mark Curl was a former employee.
A spokesperson said: “Since his arrest in October for possession of four indecent images of children we have been liaising with all agencies and have provided any information they requested.
“After a rigorous and intense investigation by the Metropolitan Police it is with great relief we now have been categorically told that there is no link between the activities of this individual and the nursery or the children who attend.”
