Full steam ahead for lo­co­mo­tive fans

LO­CO­MO­TIVE fans are in for a treat as the Cathedrals Ex­press steam train will visit Hayes and Har­ling­ton sta­tion to com­mem­o­rate Queen El­iz­a­beth’s 90th year.

Keen trainspot­ters can watch the steam lo­co­mo­tive, 6201 Princess El­iz­a­beth, named af­ter the young princess in 1933, de­part the sta­tion on Satur­day March 12.

The jour­ney sees ‘Lizzie’, as she is af­fec­tion­ately named, re­turn to the tracks af­ter a three-year re­fur­bish­ment, mak­ing its way to Ox­ford and Worces­ter for a day trip.

It will be the first in a se­ries of spe­cial cel­e­bra­tory ex­cur­sions with this fa­mous lo­co­mo­tive, to var­i­ous des­ti­na­tions across the coun­try, as the na­tion pre­pares to mark The Queen’s 90th birth­day on April 21.

Mar­cus Robert­son, chair­man of Steam Dreams, said: “We are hon­oured to be start­ing our 2016 pro­gramme with a se­ries of spe­cial cel­e­bra­tory trips, us­ing this pres­ti­gious and el­e­gant lo­co­mo­tive.

“It seems a very fit­ting way to mark The Queen’s 90th birth­day.”

‘Lizzie’ will de­part from Hayes and Har­ling­ton at around 11.10am, mak­ing her way out along the Thames Val­ley, call­ing first at Ox­ford, where pas­sen­gers can spend the af­ter­noon.

Those stay­ing on the train will ar­rive in Worces­ter at ap­prox­i­mately 2.40pm, when a tour around the cathe­dral, dat­ing back to 1084, is highly rec­om­mended.

Pas­sen­gers will re-join the Cathedrals Ex­press at 4.40pm (or 6.10pm from Ox­ford) for the jour­ney home.
