Full steam ahead for locomotive fans
LOCOMOTIVE fans are in for a treat as the Cathedrals Express steam train will visit Hayes and Harlington station to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s 90th year.
Keen trainspotters can watch the steam locomotive, 6201 Princess Elizabeth, named after the young princess in 1933, depart the station on Saturday March 12.
The journey sees ‘Lizzie’, as she is affectionately named, return to the tracks after a three-year refurbishment, making its way to Oxford and Worcester for a day trip.
It will be the first in a series of special celebratory excursions with this famous locomotive, to various destinations across the country, as the nation prepares to mark The Queen’s 90th birthday on April 21.
Marcus Robertson, chairman of Steam Dreams, said: “We are honoured to be starting our 2016 programme with a series of special celebratory trips, using this prestigious and elegant locomotive.
“It seems a very fitting way to mark The Queen’s 90th birthday.”
‘Lizzie’ will depart from Hayes and Harlington at around 11.10am, making her way out along the Thames Valley, calling first at Oxford, where passengers can spend the afternoon.
Those staying on the train will arrive in Worcester at approximately 2.40pm, when a tour around the cathedral, dating back to 1084, is highly recommended.
Passengers will re-join the Cathedrals Express at 4.40pm (or 6.10pm from Oxford) for the journey home.
