Princess launches hospital’s new unit

Harefield Gazette - - NEWS -

HILLINGDON Hospital gave a royal welcome as Princess Anne unveiled a plaque and opened their new state of the art facility for nuclear medicine. HRH The Princess Royal was welcomed on Tuesday, March 8 by the trust’s chief executive Shane DeGaris along with other members of the trust board.

He said: “We were delighted to welcome the Princess Royal today to officially open the nuclear facility.

“The new facility is a breakthrough in offering our team a tremendous opportunity to improve the experience of our patients as effectively and quickly as possible.

“The centre not only provides patients and their families with a more convenient, comfortable environment, but also enables a quicker and more reliable diagnosis.”

The royal visitor was given a tour of the centre by superintendent radiologist Lubna Hussain, where she met members of staff, before being given a demonstration of the SPECT CT scanner.

Mr DeGaris added: “The journey to bringing this facility to the trust has taken many years of hard work and it is thanks to the dedication of the radiology team that we can be proud to now offer this service to our patients.”

The £900,000 SPECT CT scanner, which is the focal point of the centre, comprises of a gamma camera with an integrated diagnostic CT scanner.

The equipment combines the best aspects of two different types of imaging in one piece of equipment, and produces more accurate, combined clinical images.

SPECT CT provides a substantially improved service for patients during their treatment as it can speed up diagnosis and they need to attend fewer appointments.

This is particularly beneficial for unwell and frail patients whose stress and anxiety at attending multiple hospital appointments can be greatly reduced.

Janet Robinson, the first patient to be treated in n the new facility was one ne of the several to speakak to the Princess Royal.

She said: “I very much enjoyed meeting the Princess Royal and sharing my experience of the centre with her.

“The team that treated me were excellent and thanks to this new scanner I’m ’m sure many otherher people will benefit in the years to come.”

Her Royal Highness unveiled a plaque marking the official opening of the centre, before being waved off by patients, staff and volunteers.

Speaking after the event, Mr DeGaris added: “We are delighted that the princess made time in her busy schedule to visit the Trust.”
