ICU nurse on an icy mission
A ROYAL Air Force reservist from RAF Northolt has taken part in a winter military exercise in Norway.
Corporal Eleanor Richards, 26, serves as a nurse with Number 600 (City of London) Squadron at the base as well as carrying out her role as a staff nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.
Corp Richards was selected to join Exercise Wintermarch, in which she and other reservists were instructed by Norwegian and Danish experts in cross-country skiing, cold weather injury prevention and avalanche survival.
“It was a great opportunity to work with the Norwegian military but also to push myself and try something new, which is what I joined the RAF Reserves to do,” she said.
Corp Richards, who became a reservist in 2013, said: “I wish I’d done it sooner. I was looking for opportunities to meet new people, enhance my career, get more training and do something a bit different from the NHS.
“I’ve developed skills I can bring to the RAF. At the same time, the RAF has helped me develop my leadership abilities and offered training not available elsewhere.”
