Street Velodrome to offer ‘unique stage’
Council-funded track to be set up in Fassnidge Park
HILLINGDON Council has announced a pop-up cycling track will come to the borough in May, staged at Fassnidge Park, in Uxbridge.
The council-funded StreetVelodrome, which will open from Friday May 20 to Sunday May 22, will offer local cyclists the opportunity to ‘ride for free on a unique stage in a thrilling series’ and showcase some of the best cycling talent.
The velodrome will also inspire families to go along to watch for free and encourage people to be more active and take up or learn to ride a bike, the council says.
The weekend’s action will offer a flavour of what is to come to Hillingdon’s awardwinning parks and green spaces this summer, where the council is launching ParkLife, a range of fun, social activities, encouraging residents and visitors to get out and get active in the sunshine.
The initiative aims to bring the whole community together to try free or cheaper individual and family activities, from gardening and walking, to family fun sessions and buggy walks.
A spokesperson for the council said: “Hillingdon is one of the greenest boroughs in the UK, with more Green Flag awards than anywhere else.
“Fassnidge Park is a great example – it covers four acres and visitors to the velodrome will also be able to investigate the bowling green, tennis courts, playground and skate park.”
On the Friday, schools and community groups will have the chance to use the track.
Residents can go along to the general public sessions for free on the Saturday, when they can just turn up between 10am and 4pm and queue to take part in this ‘come and try it’ experience.
The Sunday, between 9am and 6pm, will be the climax of the event with a race day, which will be filmed for television.
Local amateurs and confident riders can compete and attempt to qualify alongside professional riders for the finale in London in July.
The StreetVelodrome Kids Series will allow local children the opportunity to receive coaching and compete.
There will be refreshments on sale in the park and a bouncy castle throughout the weekend.
