The West Lon­don places used in favourite movies

IT SEEMS as though al­most ev­ery film or TV show nowa­days is set in cen­tral Lon­don, but did you know there are sev­eral west Lon­don lo­ca­tions that made a big im­pact in Hol­ly­wood?

We have scoured the area to re­mind you of the streets, build­ings and parks that you may not have re­alised were quite so fa­mous thanks to ap­pear­ing on the big screen.

Brent Civic Cen­tre was used to film 2015 block­buster Avengers: Age of Ul­tron which grossed $1.4 bil­lion world­wide. The cen­tre which opened in 2013 was used dur­ing film­ing to show a shop­ping cen­tre in Jo­han­nes­burg. It has also been of­fi­cially recog­nised as the “green­est pub­lic build­ing in the UK”.

Heathrow Air­port was used to film the fi­nal scenes of A Fish Called Wanda. The 1988 Bri­tishAmer­i­can com­edy was nom­i­nated for three Academy Awards with Kevin Kline tak­ing home the Os­car for Best Sup­port­ing Ac­tor.

The Ja­panese School in Eal­ing, pre­vi­ously home to Hab­er­dash­ers’ Aske’s School for Girls was the school in the com­ing-ofage drama An Ed­u­ca­tion. The film is based on mem­oirs of the same name by Lynn Bar­ber and was nom­i­nated for three academy awards in 2010.

Ruis­lip High School is the alma mat­ter of Will, Jay, Si­mon and Neil from The In­be­tween­ers. Bri­tain’s favourite trag­i­cally comic sixth for­m­ers went to “Rudge Park Com­pre­hen­sive” but it was re­ally Ruis­lip High School. The In­be­tween­ers Movie recorded the big­gest box of­fice open­ing for any Bri­tish com­edy, rak­ing in £13.2 mil­lion in it’s first week­end.

Blythe House in West Kensington has been used in film­ing for Tin­ker Tai­lor Sol­dier Spy and Thor: The Dark World. The for­mer head­quar­ters of the Post Of­fice Sav­ings Bank is now be­ing used for stor­age by the Vic­to­ria and Al­bert Mu­seum in South Kensington. The exter­ior was used to rep­re­sent the head­quar­ters of the Cir­cus in Tin­ker Tai­lor Sol­dier Spy mean­while in Thor it was used as the Po­lice Sta­tion.

The Old Vinyl Fac­tory in Hayes was also used in Thor: Dark World as an aban­doned ware­house. Whilst it may not be the most stun­ning lo­ca­tion in our list it was owned by mu­sic com­pany EMI and made records through­out the 20th Cen­tury. The film, star­ring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Port­man and Tom Hid­dle­ston, pre­miered in Lon­don in 2013 and was a huge com­mer­cial suc­cess.

Ham House near Twick­en­ham was used to film Dis­ney’s John Carter. The grand home on the banks of the River Thames was once a royal res­i­dence and has sev­eral stun­ning gar­dens. The sci­ence fic­tion movie stars Tay­lor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe and Bryan Cranston.
