The West London places used in favourite movies
IT SEEMS as though almost every film or TV show nowadays is set in central London, but did you know there are several west London locations that made a big impact in Hollywood?
We have scoured the area to remind you of the streets, buildings and parks that you may not have realised were quite so famous thanks to appearing on the big screen.
Brent Civic Centre was used to film 2015 blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron which grossed $1.4 billion worldwide. The centre which opened in 2013 was used during filming to show a shopping centre in Johannesburg. It has also been officially recognised as the “greenest public building in the UK”.
Heathrow Airport was used to film the final scenes of A Fish Called Wanda. The 1988 BritishAmerican comedy was nominated for three Academy Awards with Kevin Kline taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
The Japanese School in Ealing, previously home to Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls was the school in the coming-ofage drama An Education. The film is based on memoirs of the same name by Lynn Barber and was nominated for three academy awards in 2010.
Ruislip High School is the alma matter of Will, Jay, Simon and Neil from The Inbetweeners. Britain’s favourite tragically comic sixth formers went to “Rudge Park Comprehensive” but it was really Ruislip High School. The Inbetweeners Movie recorded the biggest box office opening for any British comedy, raking in £13.2 million in it’s first weekend.
Blythe House in West Kensington has been used in filming for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Thor: The Dark World. The former headquarters of the Post Office Savings Bank is now being used for storage by the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington. The exterior was used to represent the headquarters of the Circus in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy meanwhile in Thor it was used as the Police Station.
The Old Vinyl Factory in Hayes was also used in Thor: Dark World as an abandoned warehouse. Whilst it may not be the most stunning location in our list it was owned by music company EMI and made records throughout the 20th Century. The film, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston, premiered in London in 2013 and was a huge commercial success.
Ham House near Twickenham was used to film Disney’s John Carter. The grand home on the banks of the River Thames was once a royal residence and has several stunning gardens. The science fiction movie stars Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe and Bryan Cranston.
