Green fin­gers at the ready in Hilling­don

Res­i­dents en­cour­aged to get in­volved in In Bloom

KEEN gar­den­ers are be­ing in­vited to en­ter the an­nual Hilling­don in Bloom com­pe­ti­tion and prove their gar­den, hang­ing bas­ket or busi­ness’s dis­play is the best.

The con­test was launched on April 12 by the Mayor of Hilling­don, Cllr Ge­orge Cooper and Cllr Jonathan Bianco, Cabi­net Mem­ber for Fi­nance, Prop­erty and Busi­ness Ser­vices.

Green fin­gered en­thu­si­asts joined them dur­ing Na­tional Gar­den­ing Week at the Ru­ral Ac­tiv­i­ties Gar­den Cen­tre (RAGC) on West Dray­ton Road. The sun shone on the vis­i­tors, as they ad­mired the baby chicks, vis­ited the na­ture pond and en­joyed cream teas among the flowerbeds.

The Uxbridge Gazette Series part in Hilling­don in Bloom, where they can com­pete for first prize in 11 cat­e­gories, which in­clude best hang­ing bas­ket, front gar­den and bal­cony dis­play.

Gar­den­ing en­tries must be sub­mit­ted by June 30 and will be judged later in the sum­mer. They will also con­trib­ute to­wards the bor­ough’s sub­mis­sion into the Royal Hor­ti­cul­tural So­ci­ety run com­pe­ti­tion, Lon­don in Bloom.

Cllr Jonathan Bianco said: “This pop­u­lar com­pe­ti­tion gives lo­cal peo­ple of all ages the op­por­tu­nity to brighten up green spa­ces in the bor­ough. Whether you are a novice or a keen gar­dener, any­one is wel­come to en­ter and take part.

“So why not go down to the RAGC for some in­spi­ra­tion, I’d love to see ev­ery­one out dig­ging and plant­ing this spring.”
