‘As lightning struck my first thought was missing election’
Flash of revelation for politician whose flight was caught in a storm
A WOMAN on board a flight struck by lightning as it headed for Heathrow Airport has described how the moment a flash struck the plane her first thought was missing on on a vote in the election!
Catherine Mayer, cofounder of Women’s Equality Party, which has representatives are running in the London Mayoral elections for the first time, was sitting in the window seat when the plane was ‘enveloped in sound and light’
Video footage captured Ms Mayer’s Icelandair flight heading towards Heathrow Airport from Reykjavik, caught up in the lightning strike at around 8.30pm Wednesday April 28.
She said: “I was in Iceland on a research trip, to figure out why Iceland so often tops the world rankings for gender equality.
“It had been a blissfully uneventful flight until that moment... we dropped through the cloud cover and normally at that point you’re back in clear air.
“In this case I could see a wall of thick angry cloud ahead of us and realised we were flying straight into a storm which is why I took a picture of it.
“After we entered the storm, we were suddenly enveloped in noise and light.
“It was very fast, very loud, very bright and unambiguously a on lightning strike. My first thought was “I can’t die. I’ve got to vote for the Women’s Equality Party!”
Ms Mayer describes how the ordeal was ‘all too fast’ to be frightened but she wondered if the plane was damaged.
She continued: “When we came in to land shortly afterwards, everyone on board started talking at once, about what had just happened.
“Then the captain came on the tannoy and said “you may have noticed a lightning strike” and we all started laughing at the idea anyone could have failed to notice it.”
A fellow passenger got in touch with Ms Mayer and tweeted a picture from Heathrow of herself holding up a phone with a Women’s Equality Party sticker on it.
