Is this airport’s striking new look?

Harefield Gazette - - FRONT PAGE -

HEATHROW has asked top architects to ‘push the boundary’ of what an expanded hub airport could look like, resulting in some striking new images.

The airport said it selected four of Britain’s best aviation architects to bring to life Heathrow’s vision for the expansion of Britain’s global gateway, with ‘pioneering’ new concepts.

Shortlisted architects, which includes Grimshaw, Zaha Hadid, HOK and Benoy, were challenged to redefine what an airport should be with bold, sustainable ideas and innovative technologies.

Affordability and flexibility were also key to the brief to ensure that Heathrow remained adaptable in the fast-paced world of global aviation.

Barry Weekes, Heathrow’s head of design, said: “From welcoming Concorde to the landmark Terminals 2 and 5, Heathrow has always been at the heart of showcasing the best of British innovation and design.”

Images revealed on Wednesday May 11 show how each architect chose to portray the expanded airport, ahead of the next phase of the tender process, which will further test their creativity before a final concept designer is selected in July.

The designs were released on the same day the airport announced it would ban night flights in order to secure third runway expansion.

Mr Weekes continued: “The visionary concepts are just the start of a dialogue which will fundamentally redefine what an airport is, how it looks and feels, how it interacts with its environment and an increasingly demanding generation of new passengers and, importantly, enhancing how it connects with the communities around it.”
