Hilling­don not over­awed by tough sides

HILLING­DON Swim­ming Club ce­mented its place among the na­tion’s elite swim­ming clubs at the Na­tional Arena League fi­nals in Cardiff

The bor­ough had earned the right to rep­re­sent Lon­don when they won the re­gional fi­nals in De­cem­ber.

Com­pe­ti­tion was go­ing to be strong with eight Olympians present in the pool, but Hilling­don were not over­awed.

Ceara Bar­ber stepped up an age group, but still de­liv­ered vic­tory in the 100m back­stroke while also win­ning the most im­proved award for her own age group.

LouLou Vos and Al­fie Collins also made strong con­tri­bu­tions in the 200m in­di­vid­ual med­ley where they were both up against Olympians.

Team-mate Mitchell Adams was also charged with the task of tak­ing on a dou­ble world cham­pion in James Guy in the 100m fly. Sean Patrick McGowan and Amy Grimshaw also pro­duced strong per­for­mances in their in­di­vid­ual races.

Hilling­don even­tu­ally fin­ished ninth over­all with Guild­ford City win­ning the fi­nals by a sin­gle point to be­come cham­pi­ons. Along­side them in the Welsh cap­i­tal were teams from all over the country, in­clud­ing Ply­mouth, Liver­pool, Peter­bor­ough and Derby.
