HILLINGDON-TRAINED athletes took to the biggest stage of all last week as they flew the flag for Brunel University at the Olympic Games in Rio.

Margaret Adeoye, James Ellington, Shelayna Oskan-Clarke, Morgan Lake and Nigel Levine represented Team GB in this summer’s sporting showpiece in Brazil. Adeoye was part of the women’s 4x400metre relay squad that took bronze to claim Britain’s 66th medal of the games, although she did not make the team for the final. Team GB exceeded expectations by racking up 67 medals in total to become the first country to increase its medal tally in a summer Games after hosting the event four years earlier. It also represents Team GB GB’s most successful overseas Oly Olympics – eclipsing the 47 med medals won in Beijing in 2008 – and the best medal return since the 146 claimed in London in 190 1908. I It is also the first time since the modern Olympic era began in 1896 that a country has incre creased its medal tally at the su summer Games immediately fo following one it hosted. There were no medals elsew where for the Hillingdon he heroes though as Ellington could only manage fifth as part of the men’s 4x100m relay as Usain Bolt’s Jamaica blitzed the field.

Ellington was also no match for the fastest man on earth in the 100m heats, clocking 10.29 seconds for the distance, which was only good enough for 40th place overall.

Bolt, 29, ran 9.81 seconds in the main event to beat Justin Gatlin to gold and follow up his titles at Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Ok Oskan-ClarkeCl k missedi d out t on th the women’s 800m after failing to make the cut in the semis while Levine was part of the men’s 4x400m relay side who were controversially disqualified.

Lk Lake tk took part t i in th the women’s’ high jump final, but her leap of 1.93m was only good enough for 10th place to see her miss out on the podium.
